President’s Message--8/23/10

Glenn Harris and I met with Dennis Roman at P2K. Dennis was very hospitable to us and gave us a very in –depth tour of the range and explained all of the future improvements. “BIG DOIN’S” at P2K. Glenn asked Dennis about SDCML renewing our shooting schedule for the next year; Dennis said that there should be no problems and that we will stay at the current rate. On 8/23/10 I faxed Dennis a requested schedule for the next year.

Sincerely,

Chuck Yetter

Freedom Review

This column has no political orientation intended or implied.

I plan to provide information each month that applies to our sport. This information will come from various sources that I will acknowledge.

This month’s information is taken from the newsletter from “Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms”.

In the United States, more guns correlate with less murder. FBI data shows that America has been on a firearms buying spree since the end of 2005. Meanwhile, the FBI recently released preliminary 2009 crime data indicating that violent crime has been dropping at an accelerating rate since the end of 2006. Between November 2005 and October 2009, nearly every month’s NICS checks were higher than the year before. For example, there were 12.4 percent more NICS requests in September 2009 than in September 2008. On an annual basis, each year’s total saw a double-digit growth over the previous year beginning in 2006. NICS data mirror estimated sales data from BATFE, which also shows double-digit beginning in 2006. AFTER GUN SALES ATTAINED RECORD GROWTH IN 2006, VIOLENT CRIME RATES DECREASED AT AN ACCELERATING RATE. AFTER GUN SALES BEGAN TO PEAK IN 2006, THE MURDER RATE DECLINED AT AN ACCELERATING PACE BEGINNING IN 2007, GOING FROM -0.7% TO               -3.9% IN 2008, TO  -7.2% IN 2009. (It seems that the more guns we own the safer we are,  this is bad news for the gun grabbers, but they will just make up some kind of lie to cover it .)

Warning from the NRA

The California state senate has two bills before it: AB1810 that will require that all new purchases of long guns will be registered and  AB1934 will make it against the law to openly carry a hand gun for self defense. As we all know this has nothing to do with crime prevention but is just another attempt to take away our 2nd Amendment rights, the gun grabbers are always out there.

SDCML Shoot---8/15/10

Fifteen shooters competed in our third Sunday shoot. Matt Lowrie was range officer for the match. The targets consisted of four different swinging silhouettes, the infamous rattlebox, and a paper target  (with a twist) for a possible score of 74.

Keep in mind that the shooter who gets the best aggregate score for three out of  the next four matches, wins the trophy. The hunt started with this match but you can still win if you compete in the next three matches. Good luck!

Drop the Flag

Two teams of three participated. Today’s match was the best ever shot.

Congratulations to both teams. It was a very close shoot. There was no clear winner until the scores were added up.

These scores are almost as high as one can get without dropping the flag. Perhaps next time one team will break 100.

SDCML Shoot for September 2010—Rob Brandt R.O.

A Chunk Gun Shoot using NMLRA   target SX.

All shooting will be from the bench position. Bring your cardboard target backer, a rest or chunk for the barrel of your gun, a sandbag will work well also with the chunk, and a chair. No loading will be done on the benches, all loading will be done from tables behind the benches. This is to prevent possible accidental powder ignition from guns being fired at the bench site. Sighters and shaders are allowed for some of the matches.

Sighters are as follows: A SX target is marked “sighter” and posted. The shooter takes three shots, then takes a SX target marked “score” and places it behind the sighter target where the center of his or her group is. This is done without disturbing the position of the sighter target. Then three shots are taken using the original “sighter” target aiming point. If all goes as planned, the three shot group is centered on the “score” target.

Shaders are: Because these matches take a bit of time to conduct the sun moves. As the sun moves it changes the light on the sights which changes the impact site. It may seem to the shooter the same sight picture but it is not. Shaders fit over front and rear sights and mostly cancel the problem of sun movement. Some shaders run the full length of the barrel.

No binoculars or scopes allowed.

First Match: Tom Word Kentucky Windage Match.

Three shots at the SX target. Closest shot to theX center wins. All targets will be scored, first to last.

Second Match: Bill Large Match.

Sighters and shaders allowed. Closest shot to X center wins. All targets will be scored, first to last.

Third Match: Old Chunk.

Sighters and shaders allowed. The  three shots are measured from center of X to the center of bullet hole. The three measurements are your string total. Shortest string measurement wins. All targets will be scored, first to last.

If time allows, popular consent will repeat a match. Time will be reserved for the Drop the Flag Match.

Some targets at P2K are broken, as well as some of the rings on the rebar. Repairs need to be made. Doug Ruff will be in charge of the work party to start repairs.

Metal rails behind the trailer at P2K need to be moved.

Fee for range use will remain the same through August 2011.

New Board- Matt, Steve, Chuck, & Steven

Doug Ruff pointed out the need to add a 50 point target to each match for the duration of the Wolf Hunt. This will keep each match in the same point range. The first month’s match had a possible of 74 points.

Steven Dietz is our new range officer for the November match. Thanks for volunteering for R.O. duty.

Ryan Miller is our newest club member. Say hello to him at the match.

The muzzleloaders always welcome newcomers, beginners and spectators that might be interested in this discipline. We provide very nice medals for first, second and third place. Each month there is a designated medallion target. The winner gets a nice medallion with the SBR&GC logo (unless they already received one for high point during the current year). Gary Williams won the August medallion.

Pistol Get-Together

In August 2010, eight shooters got together. Below are scores in order of achievement. Paper targets were posted at 15, 25, and 50 yards. The 25 yard and 50 yard competition targets each had a possible of 100 points (ten shots each). The Aggregate is the combined 25 and 50 yard scores. This month’s novelty was the 18th Century Bottle Target (two shots at each of the six bottles) for a possible of 120 points (placed at 15 yards). Pistols shot included one .38 Mang and a .36 Billinghurst. The two revolvers were Old Army Rugers. Stephen, Gary, Rick, and Joanne did not compete…they were sighting in their rifles for the upcoming “wolf-hunt”. SDCML is awarding a trophy after four months of competition.
